I guess it's ok to use derogatory words to promote my album seeing that I'm a black guy... right? If you really think about it, “porch monkey” and “camel jokey” aren't such bad album titles. I'm joking of course, but we must agree that Nas is at a level where exploiting the double standard of the “N word” really won't damage his career. Reluctantly, he decided to name his album "Untitled". I wonder why one would name their album after such a powerful word. Is the content of the album in any way powerful? Yes!!! Finally I buy a rap album that is worth it, because since American Gangster (the album by Nas' new friend, and old enemy Shawn “Jay-z” Carter), I had a handful of disappointing albums, such as “Carter 3” and “Ego Trippin'”. I gave up on rap, and started to listen to the redundant repetitious chants of Dancehall reggae... what's the difference right? It's very easy for Nas to make an album with deep content and meaning. On “Hip Hop is Dead”, Nas went in and out of sticking to the topic, however on this album Nas lived up to the hype. One may say he is the best rapper in the game... but that’s a different topic. Nas normally falls short in making great commercial songs due to the fact that he is not a commercial rapper but this album has the Goldilocks combination of lyricism, rhythm and sense. Then there is “N.*.G.G.E.R.” Yes, that’s a name of a song. He slid the word in somewhere, “lol”. It is a great song about African American merits in slave societies. I really don't think that Nas needed to use this controversy to boost his album promotion. This album is a classic; just add it to the list of classic albums Nas and the state of New York has on its wall. Sorry Lil Wayne... Album of the year: Untitled Yes Ordinary Joe, I hear you loud and clear. Nas is like he said “…Over they heads like a bulimic on a see-saw”. Her refers to the talented Kelis, his wife in the line “My queen used her milkshake to bring ya’ll to my slaughterhouses”. Well it was in these slaughter houses where Nas reminded the world why he is one the best rappers alive. This album brings into the light, many conspiracy theories, that our readers have the right to agree, or disagree with. But Nas said “No matter what color you are, everybody ‘n*ggas’”. This clarifies his reason for writing this album, in a world of suppression, scandal and bad media, Nas’ dream is that we all wake up and smell the coffee that has been well brewed and sitting under our noses for centuries. The Battle Cry for the album, “Queens Get the Money” creates the setting that Nas will use to wage a war against the murderers of Hip Hop. I could write this whole review on solely this song, an expression of real talent and real rap, but alas I must continue. As he stated in his song featuring Chris Brown and The Game, “Make the World Go Round”, Nas’ plague is with the album sales. He has yet to have a top 10 single on the billboard hot 100, and yet his, is one of the most recognized names in rap. Hopefully that can change with this album, if those who appreciate real hip hop and fear its death go out and buy it. “You Can’t Stop Us Now”, “Slave food turned to Soul food”. The Ordinary Joe Blog gives “Untitled” an "A", for its display of what rap should be. Hopefully those who have forgotten this, will go out, buy it and learn a thing or two. |
